Blepharoplasty is also known as an eyelid lift or eyelid surgery. It refers to surgery of the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both. A blepharoplasty can remove sagging eyelid skin, improve the appearance of the eye, reduce puffiness, and help patients whose eyelids are obstructing their vision.
Good candidates for this procedure usually have one or more of the following:
•Sagging, drooping eyelids
•A tired look
•Puffy eyelids and/or bags under their eyes
•Fatty deposits above or below their eyes
•Excess skin on their eyelids that impairs their vision
Will I be under anesthesia?
Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. It can take several hours depending on the extent of the surgery. Most patients return home the same day but must have someone to drive them home and stay with them for the first night.
What to expect during Eyelid Surgery
During the procedure, incisions are made in the crease of the upper eyelid or below the lash line on the lower eyelid. The excess fat and skin are removed and the incision is carefully closed with tiny sutures. A blepharoplasty is commonly combined with a facelift or brow lift.
After your procedure
If you choose blepharoplasty, here’s what you can expect after the procedure:
- Stitches are typically removed after a week.
- You can plan on returning to work 2 to 3 weeks following surgery.
- You can resume exercise and other more strenuous activities after about 3 weeks.
- The scars will be well concealed, will fade and will get progressively lighter over the next 6 months until they are undetectable.
